Взрослые блохи основную часть времени проводят на теле хозяина, а их яйца, куколки и личинки можно обнаружить в окружающей среде.
Блохи имеют особый сенсорный орган, который способен улавливать нахождение недалеко возможной жертвы. Поскольку длина прыжка паразитов составляет 35 см, заражение происходит даже без непосредственного контакта с другими животными.
После попадания на тело животного, блоха сразу начинает питаться, спариваться и откладывать яйца. Хотя взрослая блоха живет от 2 до 3 месяцев, за это время она успевает отложить до 500 яиц. Следует учесть, что яйца блох не крепятся к шерсти животного, а падают на пол. Спустя 1-10 дней появляются личинки, способные двигаться. Они прячутся в щелях и коврах, питаются фекалиями взрослых паразитов, затем окукливаются, и в стадии кокона живут до года, пока не почувствуют появление рядом потенциальной жертвы. Куколки выживают даже зимой.
Попадая на тело животного, блохи доставляют значительный дискомфорт, поскольку они двигаются и питаются. При сильной инвазии у животного даже может развиться анемия. Кроме того, блохи служат переносчиками ленточного червя, опасного для человека.
Слюна блохи может стать причиной развития блошиного аллергического дерматита у кошек и собак, который сопровождается сильным зудом. Животные, которые не страдают гиперчувствительностью к блошиной слюне, могут испытывать лишь небольшой дискомфорт.
У собак-аллергиков зуд провоцирует сильные расчесы кожи, эритемы, локальные облысения участков кожи, папулы, пустулы, корочки. Поражения наиболее сильно заметны в области живота, паха, бедер, поясницы. У кошек патология проявляется милиарным дерматитом и зудом в области головы и шеи.
Диагностируется патология путем сбора анамнеза, анализа клинической картины, и обнаружения паразитов либо блошиных фекалий.

Борьба с блохами основана на следующих принципах:
- обработка всех животных, живущих в одном помещении, направленная на уничтожение взрослых паразитов;
- обработка окружающей среды с целью предотвращения повторного заражения.
